2. John Milton's Paradise Lost is where Mammon becomes something different entirely. After the fall, it is Mammon who leads his legions in mining gold from the earth itself, who builds Pandemonium - the capital of Hell - with impossible speed and grandeur.
3. That image - colossal energy directed entirely at building wealth from the earth - is the one that took hold in serious occult practice.
4. Jacques Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal in 1818 codified Mammon as Hell's ambassador to England - the court of commerce, of industry, of empire built on trade. Where wealth moves in concentrated form, Mammon's energy follows.
