The word Jyotish literally means "science of light." The light it refers to is not just sunlight, but the light of planets and stars as understood to carry cosmic influence over life on Earth.

Jyotish is mentioned in the Vedanga, one of the six auxiliary disciplines supporting the study of the Vedas, which places it as foundational knowledge rather than peripheral mysticism. References to planetary observation and astrological calculation appear in texts like the Rigveda and the Mahabharata, suggesting a practice that is at minimum 5,000 years old.

Vedic Astrology vs Western Astrology: The Key Difference

Most people in India grow up with some awareness of their "rashi" - their moon sign according to Vedic astrology. But many do not realise how structurally different Jyotish is from the Western horoscope system they might also encounter.

The most fundamental difference is the zodiac used.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons - the sun's entry into Aries always marks the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the actual positions of constellations in the sky. Due to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, these two systems have drifted approximately 23 degrees apart over centuries. This is why your sun sign in Vedic astrology is almost always different from your sun sign in Western astrology.

The practical consequence of this difference is significant. Vedic astrology tends to be more accurately predictive - particularly for timing events in a person's life - because it stays anchored to astronomical reality rather than a seasonal abstraction.

The Core Elements of a Jyotish Reading

1. The Kundali (Birth Chart)

Everything in Vedic astrology begins with the Kundali, also called the Janam Kundali or birth chart. This is a diagram showing the exact positions of all planets at the moment of your birth, plotted against the twelve houses of the zodiac.

To cast an accurate Kundali, three things are needed: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. The time is especially important - a difference of even a few minutes can change the ascendant, which changes the entire chart interpretation.

2. The Navagrahas (Nine Planets)

Vedic astrology works with nine planetary bodies called the Navagrahas. These are:

• Surya (Sun) — soul, authority, the father, vitality
• Chandra (Moon) — mind, emotions, the mother, instincts
• Mangal (Mars) — energy, courage, conflict, ambition
• Budh (Mercury) — intelligence, communication, logic, business
• Guru (Jupiter) — wisdom, expansion, children, dharma
• Shukra (Venus) — beauty, relationships, pleasure, creativity
• Shani (Saturn) — discipline, karma, delay, structure
• Rahu (North Node) — worldly desire, obsession, foreign influences

Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets but mathematical points - where the moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Their influence in Jyotish is considered powerful and often transformative.

3. The Rashis (Zodiac Signs)

The twelve rashis in Vedic astrology carry the same names as Western zodiac signs - Aries through Pisces - but are positioned differently due to the sidereal calculation. Each rashi has a ruling planet, a set of qualities, and specific significations for health, character, and life areas.

4. The Bhavas (Houses)

The twelve houses, or Bhavas, divide the birth chart into sections, each governing a specific area of life:

• 1st house: Self, body, personality
• 2nd house: Wealth, family, speech
• 4th house: Home, mother, inner happiness
• 5th house: Children, intelligence, creativity, past merit
• 7th house: Marriage, partnerships, public dealings
• 10th house: Career, reputation, authority
• 12th house: Losses, liberation, foreign lands, spirituality

The placement of planets within these houses, and the relationships between planets, form the basis of chart interpretation.

5. The Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions)

This is where Jyotish reveals a depth that Western astrology simply does not have. The zodiac in Vedic astrology is also divided into 27 Nakshatras - lunar mansions of approximately 13 degrees and 20 minutes each. Each Nakshatra has a ruling deity, a ruling planet, a symbol, and specific qualities that fine-tune the meaning of any planet or point placed within it.

Your Moon's Nakshatra, in particular, is considered one of the most important factors in understanding your emotional nature, mental patterns, and relationship style.

6. The Dasha System (Planetary Periods)

The Dasha system is perhaps the most powerful predictive tool in all of Vedic astrology, and it has no real equivalent in Western astrology. It assigns each person a sequence of planetary periods — major periods (Mahadashas) and sub-periods (Antardashas) - based on the position of the Moon at birth.

Each planet rules a Mahadasha of a fixed number of years: the Sun rules 6 years, the Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, and Venus 20. How to Begin Learning Jyotish

Vedic astrology is vast. But the good news is that you do not need to understand everything before you start finding it useful.

A meaningful starting point looks like this:

Generate your Kundali using a reliable calculator (the time and place of birth must be accurate). Look at your Lagna (ascendant sign) - this is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, and it is the framework around which your entire chart is read. Then look at where your Moon is placed - the sign, the house, and the Nakshatra. This alone tells you a great deal about your emotional nature, your mind, and your instinctive patterns.

From there, begin learning the Navagrahas and what each planet represents in human life. Then study the twelve houses and what they govern. The chart will start to speak to you gradually, piece by piece.
